What I did and worked - Exported each midi files from Ableton, make sure they start at the same timestamp.

In order to make typical MIDITrail video you need to use SMF1 and assign different instruments to different channels, at maximum of 16. Unlike some daw that can export midi in SMF1 "multitrack midi" form, Ableton export midi in SMF0 "single track midi", which is for one instrument in most situation all its contents are assigned to midi channel 1.
